soulful safespace sunday: juneteenth retreat 2022

this program was a day of intentional retreat centering connection, reflection, and restoration embodying the living spirit of ancestral freedom in celebration and observance of the juneteenth holiday.

participants built paths toward collective liberation for their past present and future selves influenced by the efforts of their ancestors, in honor of those affected by the middle passage.

this program was guided by communal meditation and a freedom mapping writing workshop led by kansas city esteemed poet and organizer, sheri purpose hall.

this program was supported by a charlotte street foundation cultural producers grant.

how do you embody the living spirit of ancestral freedom?

what are the liberatory acts that you choose for yourself to carve pathways to freedom?

as apart of our Juneteenth retreat, participants were able to engage in a writing focused freedom mapping workshop lead by teaching spoken word artist, author, and organizer, sheri purpose hall, in collectively building maps toward freedom.

sheri’s workshop offering was titled, the color purple. she directed us in writing poems through recounting the character “ceily” in the well know work, the color purple by alice walker, and how she carved her own pathway to freedom.

as apart of our Juneteenth retreat, participants were also able to support local black businesses through our ujima market.

juneteenth’s ujima market positions entrepreneurship as an extension of the living embodiment of ancestral freedom. choosing to resist and redefine economic systems through equitable distribution of wealth and material resources among all people - is freedom in itself.
